Houston's Theater District Is a Summer Camp Destination
If your kid sings show tunes in the shower, choreographs dances in the living room, or has memorized every word of a Broadway cast album, summer in Houston is for them. The same Theater District that draws sold-out audiences during the season transforms into a working classroom in June, July, and August — with some of the country's most respected performing arts institutions running camps for ages 5 through 18.
And if you're traveling in for camp from out of town, every program below is a short walk or quick drive from our hotel at 401 Louisiana Street.
Alley Theatre Play Makers
The Alley is a Tony Award–winning regional theater two blocks from our front door, and its Play Makers summer camp is the gold standard for Houston theater education. Lower and middle school campers spend nine days exploring acting, storytelling, movement, and design through the lens of classic children's books, then perform what they've built for family and friends on the final day.
2026 sessions run from early June through early August, with multiple two-week and one-week options. Camp days run 9 AM to 3 PM, with extended care available 8 AM to 5 PM. The Alley also reserves scholarship slots in every age group — well worth applying early.
Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) at the Hobby Center
TUTS produces the touring Broadway season at Sarofim Hall, and their summer programming at the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre is built for kids who want the full triple-threat experience. Singing, dancing, and acting are taught by working Broadway and regional theater professionals, with classes calibrated for everyone from first-timers to teens already in school musicals.
The Hobby Center is a five-minute walk from the hotel. Drop-off is easy, pickup is easy, and the campus itself is part of the magic — kids spend their days inside one of the most beautiful performing arts venues in the country.
CYT Houston (Christian Youth Theater)
CYT runs one- and two-week musical theater day camps for ages 5–12, plus Summer Stock Shows for ages 8–15 where campers audition, rehearse, and stage a fully ticketed musical in just two weeks. Older teens (13–18) can train as theater technicians in the Backstage Ninjas program, and ages 13–21 can attend the Film Acting Master Class. The variety means siblings of different ages can usually all find something the same week.
Why Families Stay Downtown
Most Houston summer theater camps run 9 AM to 3 PM, which leaves a long window each afternoon for the rest of the family. Staying downtown turns that window into the best part of the trip. The Downtown Aquarium, Discovery Green, the Children's Museum, and Buffalo Bayou Park are all within a short walk or quick rideshare. After pickup, you can be at any of them in minutes.
Our suites are built for this kind of stay. Every one has a full kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, and dishwasher — pack lunches in the morning, stock snacks for tired campers, make breakfast at your own pace. Every suite also has an in-unit washer and dryer, which matters more than you'd think when one kid sweats through three T-shirts a day learning choreography in June.
Suites That Fit a Family
Our two-bedroom Superior Apartment sleeps six in 1,600 square feet and gives parents a real bedroom door to close after bedtime. Deluxe and Superior suites at 1,000–1,200 square feet sleep four with a sleeper sofa in a separate living area — room for siblings to spread out, do homework, or watch a movie while parents catch their breath. Beyond Camp
Round out the experience by taking your camper to see a real show. The Alley, the Hobby Center, Jones Hall (Houston Symphony), and the Wortham Center (Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera) all run summer programming, and several offer student-priced tickets. Watching a professional production after a week of camp lands differently — suddenly your kid is dissecting blocking, lighting, and orchestration like they've been doing it for years.
Book the Whole Summer or Just a Week
Whether you're driving in from Austin for a single week or flying down from out of state for a full month-long program, we can host the whole trip. Extended-stay rates are available for two-plus week bookings — ask when you call.
